Transfer Data between machines |
|
|
We are quite often asked if you can copy transfer data from one machine to another and the simple answer is YES. Although we only license our software to one machine, we do recognise the industry we are serving and there is quite often a practical reason you would want to use our software on 2 machines.
At the moment, copying data is a manual process and as it is not covered under the strict terms of our license. As such, any transfer of data is entirely at your own risk and Ambrit Software cannot accept any responsibility for loss or corruption of data under any circumstances.
A much safe and secure method is under development called our Multi User version, which will not only provide a seamless transfer mechanism but also allow for multiple data sets. This means that someone could be working on the system in the office, while you are updating your copy on the road and synchronisation of the 2 data sets will take place overnight for example by merging both data sets.
The manual process does have a downside as implied above in that at the moment any data on the receiving machine will be overwritten, so in effect only one machine can be used. However this method does allow for the office machine for example to update a travelling laptop so that you have the latest information with you when visiting the client.
The transfer mechanism is very simply. You simply transfer the data in it's entirety from one machine to the other. However you need to know where the data is located on each machine. This can be found above in the File Locations section.
Step 1 - Ensure that the version on both machines is the same before attempting to copy data across. If this is not the case then there is a very high risk that your data will be irretrievably corrupted.
Step 2 - Using the file locations above for DATA Files, copy the folder Farriers Manager (including all the sub folders) from the machine either using an external device or a network.
Step 3 - Now paste the folder just copied into the folder AMBRIT SOFTWARE folder on the receiving machine. Confirm that you wish to overwrite existing files and folders. If no confirmation is requested then you have copied the data to an incorrect location.
Step 4 - That is it! NOTE: Both machines now have an identical data set.
Step 5 - If both machines are using the same operating system then no further action is needed. However, if the operating system s are different (i.e. you are copying XP to Vista and vice versa) then you will need to run a small conversion utility. This can be found in Start/Programs/Ambrit Software/Farriers Manager/Convert OS. Failure to run this utility can result in inaccurate data display on the receiving machine although no data will be lost.
